Real Estate musings in Midland, Penetanguishene, Tay, Tiny, Springwater and Georgian Bay
Move to Midland and live longer

Yesterday I had an 11 am appointment at the eye doctor. I left the house at 5 minutes to eleven and arrived early. Sixty minutes later, I pulled into the driveway - eyes examined and glasses picked out. Time in transit - six minutes.

Back in the city my trip to the optometrist usually took 30 minutes and she wasn't that far away. Parking took up most of that time and cost money. Not once in 25 years did I walk into the office and see the doctor directly. Total time usually ranged between 2 and 3 hours. That's nearly twenty hours of my life I'm not getting back. Or - that's twenty hours of my life I don't have to spend on doctor appointments in Midland. And that's just one doctor. So there you go, I just got a day back on my life. Assuming I live another 25 years.

If I add up all the extra time (and money) just trying to run the most mundane errands in the city, I think I may just end up living an extra 10 years here on the shores of glorious Southern Georgian Bay.

I regularly have the opportunity to extol the virtues of the Midland, Penetanguishene, Tay and Tiny area to contacts who are considering a move to our fair land. And boy do I pull out all the stops! For city dwellers, I love to talk about the easy access to goods and services. Nothing is really much more than 10 minutes away. If you have a yen for a midnight snack, our grocery stores are open 24 hours. We've got three hospitals - Georgian Bay General is terrific, we have a rehab and hospice unit in Penetanguishene and a mental health centre. New doctors come to the area all the time. The wait for a family physician is getting shorter all the time.

What we don't have can usually be found in Barrie which is just a short hop down the road. We've got restaurants, shopping, music and theatre. And Casino Rama in nearby Orillia. And yes, we get lots of snow some years, but think how good that is for winter sports! Our municipal services are on top of snow removal so you don't need to strap on the snowshoes to get around. But if you do have snowshoes, clomp on over to the Wye Marsh and experience something truly wonderful.

Many of our citizens have the good fortune to head south for the winter. New condo developments in this area make it easy to lock up and go. And summers on Georgian Bay area so glorious that you forget the winters completely. Boaters are spoiled for choice with almost a dozen marinas to choose from. And all just minutes from anywhere. Really!!

So if you want to live longer, move where the pace is a bit slower, everything's closer and real estate is still sensibly priced. Call me, I can add years to your life.
